Some Unicode characters have no visible glyph but still affect search, matching or copy-and-paste behavior. Common examples include a zero-width space and a byte order mark (BOM).
The default option targets selected formatting characters. Joiners and non-joiners can be meaningful in emoji and writing systems, so the tool preserves them unless you explicitly select their removal.
How to use this tool
- Paste the text that is behaving unexpectedly.
- Open Custom cleaning and choose the invisible-character options you want.
- Compare the before-and-after text; only copy when the result is appropriate for the language and content.
Common invisible characters
A zero-width space can create an unexpected split point, a BOM may appear at the beginning of text, and a non-breaking space looks like a normal space but prevents a line wrap. Joiners can affect how characters combine or how emoji render.
Remove only what you understand
Removing invisible formatting marks can help diagnose search and comparison problems, but stripping every invisible Unicode character is not always safe. Keep zero-width joiners and non-joiners when language shaping or emoji sequences matter.
Frequently asked questions
What invisible characters can this tool remove?
The selected option removes a defined set of formatting characters, including zero-width spaces, BOM and soft hyphen. Other controls separately normalize non-breaking spaces and remove joiners.
Should I remove zero-width joiners?
Not by default. Joiners can be essential for emoji and for text in some languages. Remove them only when you understand the effect on your text.
