Every size, and where the number comes from

Instagram Post — Square

The default feed post. Shows the whole image without cropping in a profile grid.

1080 × 1080 · 1:1

Checked 6 October 2026

Instagram Post — Portrait

Takes the most vertical space in the feed, so it is the best choice for a caption-led design.

1080 × 1350 · 4:5

Checked 6 October 2026

Instagram Post — Landscape

Shorter in the feed, so it suits a wide photograph or a single line of type.

1080 × 566 · 1.91:1

Checked 6 October 2026

Instagram Story

Full-screen and vertical. The area above and below the middle band is covered by Instagram’s own interface, so important content is kept out of it.

1080 × 1920 · 9:16

Checked 6 October 2026

Instagram Reel Cover

Shown small on the profile grid, so type needs to be large and the subject centred.

1080 × 1920 · 9:16

Checked 6 October 2026

Instagram Carousel

A sequence of portrait slides, swiped in order. Every slide uses the same canvas size.

1080 × 1350 · 4:5

Why the sizes are what they are

Every canvas is defined once, in one configuration file, with the source it came from and the date it was last verified. The editor, the exporter, the previews on this page and the structured data on the template pages all read that one definition, so a size cannot be right in the editor and wrong in the file you download.

Aspect ratios of 1:1, 4:5, 1.91:1 and 9:16 are all served by one renderer rather than four layouts, which is why the same template works as a square post, a portrait post and a story without being redrawn.

Frequently asked questions

What does the Social Media Maker do?

It turns a template and your own words into a finished social media image at the correct size. You choose a format, pick a template, edit the text, add your own photograph if you want one, and download a PNG or JPEG at the exact platform dimensions.

Is it really free?

Yes. Every template in the library is free and every one is fully editable. There are no PRO badges, no locked layouts, no watermarks and no export limits, and no account is required.

What sizes can I make?

Instagram square (1080 × 1080), portrait (1080 × 1350), landscape (1080 × 566), story (1080 × 1920), reel cover (1080 × 1920) and carousel slides (1080 × 1350). Each size is defined once, with the date it was last verified.

How many templates are there?

Over a hundred, across nineteen categories including business, food, fashion, jewellery, real estate, fitness, travel, education, technology, finance, beauty and events. They are built from eighteen genuinely different compositions rather than colour swaps of a handful of layouts.

Do my images get uploaded?

No. A photograph you add is decoded, fitted and drawn inside your browser. Nothing is sent to a server, and the design you are working on is stored on your own device.

Can I use the designs commercially?

Yes. A design you make is yours, with no attribution required and nothing embedded in the file.

Does the text get cut off?

No. If a headline is longer than its box the type shrinks a little to fit, and if it still does not fit the editor says so rather than silently clipping it. Every template is checked at every size it is offered for.

Can I save my work and come back to it?

Yes — your design is saved in your own browser as you work, so a reload does not lose it. Saving designs to a ToolDuck account, with a dashboard for projects, uploads and exports, is the next piece of this product and is not switched on yet.
