Why does my phone produce HEIC files?

Apple switched to HEIC as the default camera format because it stores the same image in about half the space. You can also change that in Settings → Camera → Formats to "Most Compatible", which saves JPGs from then on — but the photos you already have stay HEIC.

Does converting lose quality?

A JPG is re-encoded, so it is not bit-for-bit identical to the original. At quality 90 the difference is not visible at normal viewing sizes while the file stays small. The image is not resized: the pixel dimensions are preserved exactly.

Is my photo uploaded to your server?

Yes — browsers cannot read HEIC, so the conversion has to happen on the server. The file is written to a private temporary location, converted in memory, and both are removed as soon as the download is prepared. Nothing is kept, and nothing is added to an account.

Can I convert several photos at once?

One at a time for now. A batch of HEIC files is on the list, but it is deliberately not offered until it can be done without a long, silent wait.
